    About

The Nurses’ Handbook - how to survive and thrive while caring for others
is the result of a collaboration between former colleagues, Ann Jaloba and Jean Gray.

Ann, former deputy editor of Nursing Standard, is now one of the UK’s leading hypnotherapists, specialising in helping healthcare professionals. She has built up a toolkit of techniques, knowledge, stories and research which she uses with her nurse clients to deal with issues such as stress and burnout. Ann has also coached nurses who want to take a different career step and has helped with specific problems such as bullying at work.

Jean Gray was editor of the leading weekly journal Nursing Standard and editorial director at RCN Publishing from 1998 until 2014 and is currently a freelance writer and editor.

It is well known that happy staff deliver the best care, but the demands of nursing in a constantly changing environment mean that nurses too often neglect their own wellbeing. The Nurses’ Handbook offers a range of exercises and techniques that will help readers look after themselves at the same time as caring for others.

While recognising the tremendous rewards that come with a career in nursing, Ann covers some of the unavoidable pressures facing individuals in the profession, such as changing shift patterns, the danger of burnout, dealing with change and getting the most from clinical supervision.

But the book is not just about dealing with problems. The aim is to help readers develop their full potential, making the most of the huge variety of career options available to nurses.

With a foreword written by former RCN General Secretary Christine Hancock, there are also inspiring stories from some of the UK’s nursing leaders who share the experiences that got them where they are in the profession today.

They are: Jean White, Chief Nursing officer for Wales; Professor Elizabeth Anionwu; award winning bereavement and organ transplant specialist Fiona Murphy; Paul Jebb; and nursing journalist Laura Downes.

The book is available in hard copy or in electronic format and comes with a range of interactive features including:
