Have you seen an animal wearing makeup? More specifically, have you seen a fish wearing lipstick?
The Red-Lipped Batfish is definitely a fish – but it has such bright colored lips that you would think that it’s wearing lipstick.
What’s interesting about this fish is that it’s not good at swimming. As you very well know, different types of fish live in the sea – and they can all swim very well. Well, except for the Red-Lipped Batfish. Since it wobbles and shakes when it tries to swim, it just walks (sort of). As a walking fish, it mainly walks on the ocean floor instead of swimming in the water.
The Red-Lipped Batfish is also a type of angler fish. Species of angler fish is also very interesting because they carry with them a growth (a part of their body) that looks like a fishing rod. This actually functions as a fishing rod because it allows the Red-Lipped Batfish to catch its prey (small fishes and other sea creatures).
Because it’s called a “batfish,” is the Red-Lipped Batfish related to bats? Well, not really. It’s only called that because it has some features that make it somewhat look like a bat.
