In the course of a series of violent incidents at major banks, the culprit leaves behind at each scene a cryptic literary quotation. He seems to have developed a personal grudge against bankers, following the recent debacle in the mortgage-loan industry, when financiers worldwide began to enforce widespread foreclosures causing deep personal hardship and resentment. Inspector George Mason, of Scotland Yard Special Branch, together with his able young assistant, Detective-Sergeant Alison Aubrey, sets out to discover a pattern behind the series of attacks. Their investigations, starting in the City of London, Britain's storied financial center, lead them in turn to several major cities in northern Europe, in their quest to unearth the significance of the baffling series of quotations and bring the elusive culprit to justice.
