Signs of Depression in Teens: How to Help a Depressed Teenager

Depression in teens is a very serious matter, but those who are suffering from this condition can still hope for a cure as long as there is someone who will notice the symptoms as soon as possible. If you suspect that a teenager you know – son/daughter, student or friend is depressed, do not wait for too long before seeking treatment.

In my newest book, “Signs of Depression in Teens: How to Help a Depressed Teenage,” I give you tips on:
    • The signs and symptoms of depression in teenagers
    • How to help a depressed teenager
    • The difference between adult and teenage depression
    • How to tell if your teenager is suicidal
    • Advice on what to say to your depressed teen
    • And much, much more…

How to help a depressed teenager from the book:

To make the conversation meaningful and effective, take note of the following:

-Give your support. Make sure that you offer them your full and unconditional presence. Prevent yourself from asking too many questions as depressed teenagers do not want the feeling of being crowded. However, stress to them that you are willing and prepared to give whatever type of support they require.

    - Do not criticize. You should fully listen without having to lecture the adolescent what to do. Keep yourself from passing judgment or criticism once they start to talk. What matters here is that you get them to communicate with you. It is also a good idea to avoid giving unsolicited ultimatums and advice.

    - Acknowledge their feelings. Try your best not to talk them out of the depression no matter how illogical or ridiculous their feelings are to you. What you must do is to simply validate the sadness, pain, or any negative emotion that they are feeling. If you do not do this, the teen will sense that you are not taking things seriously.

    More from the book:

It is not enough that you encourage a depressed teenager to seek treatment. It is also important that you are there to offer your support throughout the course of the treatment. It is the time that they need you the most to make them feel they are accepted, cared for, and letting them know how important they are. So, try your best to exert patience, although dealing with a depressed adolescent can be very draining. Just bear in mind that they do not mean to cause you suffering as they are also suffering, too.

Most importantly, make sure you remain involved in the treatment. See to it that the teen is adhering to all the instructions of the treatment. Along with this, learning about teen depression should be one of your main goals. This can equip you in helping a depressed teen better as you gain mastery of the disorder.

As you can see, the tips I offer on helping a depressed teenager are straight to the point. You won’t be wasting your time sifting through a bunch of useless psychological jargon. NO! You’re going to be learning from condensed information exactly how to help a depressed teenager.
