This book examines Russia’s economic progress since the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991. The country’s transformation, from a socialist command economy to a free market economy, has been something of a roller-coaster ride over the past 25 years. Russia has bounced back from its humiliating financial crisis of the late 1990s to become a high-income country, with Vladimir Putin overseeing more than a decade of steady economic growth. However, much of this was on the back of high oil and gas prices, hiding major structural problems in the Russian economy. Commodity dependence, corruption and geopolitical instability threaten to derail attempts to modernise Russia, and give it true advanced economy status. Where its economy is heading remains unclear, although its size, military strength, and political influence will inevitably ensure Russia’s continued role as a global superpower.
