It was night, the bats in the rafters awake and watchful. But all seemed still, most of the monsters asleep or on sentry duty by the bookshop door. But not everything slept. Hidden in the deepest corner of The Wishing Shelf, over a hundred books had gathered, answering the call to arms.
The ‘Witch Spotter’s’ book, perched on a top shelf, hushed them. “Brothers and sisters,” she whispered, “wickedness has invaded our home. Queen Blasthoof is slowly destroying our papery world, but not for much longer for we will stop her.”
“Hurrah!” murmured the books.
“Kill her!” A hushed call from ‘My Milkman’s A Mass Murderer’.
“No!” The ‘Witch Spotter’s’ book stamped her corner on the shelf. “If we kill her, there will be two of them. We must be smart.”
“I know a few clever booby traps.” This from ‘So You Want To Trap A Dorfmoron’.
“Ooh! Yes! YES!” The books muttered excitedly.
“The shubablybubs tossed a few of our chums in a skip,” whispered ‘The Hush Hush History of Magic’. “They must be rescued.”
“A lot of them will be injured,” called out ‘Stung, Cut and Nipped. Get Better Quick’. “I can set up a hospital tent in the attic.”
“Bravo!” whispered the ‘Witch Spotter’s’ book, flapping her covers. “We must hinder Blasthoof in her attempts to find this book she needs. Soon our boss, Miss Brady, will return, but till then it is up to us. Agreed?”
“Agreed,” murmured the books.
“But what of the charm maker?” piped in ‘My Milkman’s A Mass Murderer’, slyly. “If Blasthoof gets hold of her tw...”
“There will be no need to harm Kitta,” stormed the ‘Witch Spotter’s’ book. “Miss Brady will be here soon.”
“But if she’s not?”
“If she’s not - then I will do the job myself.”
“If you need venom...”
“I have venom,” seethed the ‘Witch Spotter’s’ book, blowing out her covers.
Up in the rafters, the bats began to screech.
“Shubablybub troopers!” yelled ‘Goblins, A History’. “Go! Go! Go!” And the books ran for cover.
