You think the game of cricket is boring? Obviously you have yet to come across the brand of cricket played in the annual match between the villages of Upper Medlock and Lower Medlock. The Wars of the Roses were less keenly contested. And probably had fewer casualties. So when the great ex-England cricket captain Jonny Pickering retires from the professional arena and comes to live in the village of Upper Medlock it is the most wonderful news the local cricket team have ever had; for with Jonny in their side victory will be theirs forever more. However the Lower Medlock team believe they have as much right as their arch rivals to Pickering’s services. And will do anything short of murder to acquire them. Blackmail is certainly not out of the question. Nor is supplying Pickering with willing partners of both sexes. Pickering in the meantime is trying his best to enjoy a long and happy retirement. Come the day of the match and Pickering still hasn’t decided which of the village teams he will play for. If either. However he has his own ideas on how he can solve the problem and get on with his life in peace...
It’s Not Cricket! is a hilarious account of village cricket that probably tells you more about the people who play it than they would care to admit to.

"I think I may have read all of Terry Ravenscroft's books starting with Stairlift to Heaven - possibly the funniest book ever written and he has maintained his form in this book.
The nearest he has done to this is Captain's Day about golf which is also side splittingly funny even if you don't play. In the same way It's Not Cricket needs no prior knowledge of the game to find it highly amusing.
What I like about Ravenscroft is that he is a bit rude. Now, not in the offensive way that most of the so called comics are today on TV, but more targeted. The use of four letter swear words is held to a minimum but when used they are like a rapier of wit. When the local trollop uses her charms on our hero, Ravenscroft manages to turn sex into something so funny I could not help myself but laugh out loud.
In a nutshell we have here a book of rare genius. It will make you laugh out loud and not many books can do that. Just keep it away from the younger children in your family." M G Chisholm.
