In this eleventh diary, we read of a German guard who has been assigned to assist the dreaded torturer Karl in interrogating Jewish prisoners. The camp commandant, Rudolph Hoss, and Himmler, one of Hitler's top henchmen, ask that the assistant record the latest midnight torture session. A Polish sympathizer from town has hidden eight Jews from the Nazis and he is refusing to divulge their whereabouts.
As is the case in all the diaries, the Nazis have a thirst to commit war crimes during the Holocaust that brutalize and exterminate Jews.
What is new in this diary, is the revelation that Rudolph Hoss has a secret room where he instructs Karl to conduct the midnight sessions.
As always, these diaries are not for the weak or squeamish, and yet, we are faced with the reality that millions of Jews faced such harsh conditions on a daily basis.
The author has written these diaries with the hope that the suffering of Jews at Auschwitz will never be forgotten.
It is hard for any reader to forget what is written in any of these diaries once they have read them. And this is especially true with this eleventh installment, Torture At Midnight.
