After becoming involved in a court scandal because of his preference for men, Jothan, the new Baron of Darkwood, is sent north to assume leadership of a long-deserted castle. On his way inside, he is confronted by a hideous creature—a living gargoyle, which he frightens off with his sword. He continues inside to find the castle bailey a total ruin, though fortunately a few servants still live inside and have kept the rooms clean and the larder stocked.
The one bright spot in his new fiefdom is a mysterious young man named Delphas, who appears each night around bedtime and sets Jothan's lonely heart alight. When Delphas admits that he is of noble blood himself, Jothan invites him to share the castle. At that point a horrible secret comes out, one that may cost Jothan both his newfound happiness and his life.
