Vikings lead tough, busy lives. Looting Ireland, discovering America, hunting wild boar and moose – it's all in a day's work for Joe Ordinary Viking. Or his wife, Jo Ordinary Viking. You try serving a Viking three beans and a sprig of parsley, artistically arranged on a plate, and you'll see where that gets you.
That's not to say that Viking food is bland, or boring. Quite the contrary: it's filling, very tasty, easy to cook (in most cases anyhow) and can usually be made in large quantities to allow a) catering for an entire returning raiding party or b) dividing up into portions and freezing it in the nearest glacier.
But is it right for you?
If you’re a vegetarian, or lactose intolerant, you won’t have much fun with this book.
If you’re on a diet, I feel for you. You would probably love the recipes in here. But, quite frankly, just reading about the book is enough to make people put on weight. It is very heavy on the old full-fat milk products, and about half of the recipes are for cakes and other sweet stuff. So you may want to click away from this page, however reluctantly.
WARNING: Despite the frighteningly lifelike depiction of a viking on the cover, this book only contains recipes I have collected during my travels in Scandinavia and northern Europe. It is totally lacking in historical recipes such as Hákarl, Surströmming or Lutefisk (google those to see what treats you're missing out on by buying this book).
Still here? Wonderful! You have the right viking mentality. Why don’t you download the sample book to see how you like the food?
