    About

Notwithstanding the frequently unreliable nature of ‘facts’ in general, this collection contains 2,017—arranged (primarily) chronologically—dealing with a range of aspects relating to Hull: its history, its three major sporting teams, the often tragic trawling industry; buildings, institutions, parks; companies, people, worthies; the Port of Hull, docks; cinemas and theatres, and more: from the lack of any mention of Hull in the Domesday Book of 1086, through what has been called the first act of the English Civil War (Sir John Hotham’s refusing Charles I entry to the town, at Beverley Gate in April 1642); to Ronnie Pickering becoming an overnight internet sensation in September 2015, and Philip Larkin being memorialized in Westminster Abbey’s Poets’ Corner on 2 December 2016.
A collection of facts (however that word can be defined) for everyone with any kind of connection to Hull; written with the intention of covering as wide a range of topics as possible, and providing just enough information about individual subjects to ignite the curiosity of readers to want to discover more. Whether you were born in Hull, live there, or have ancestors who were born or lived there; or you simply would like to know more about the UK City of Culture 2017, you might be surprised to learn the extent to which Hullensians have changed the world.
