    About

Published after a century of professional planning in the United Kingdom, Kaleidoscope City brings together short, accessible and engaging opinions from leading practitioners and theorists in the built environment.

Looking to both the past and the future, it raises important and often emotive questions about the design and development of our cities with a particular focus on London. How should we balance economic growth with environmental protection? How big is too big? Edited by prominent urbanist, Jonathan Manns, the work opens and energises debates in urban planning and development in a manner that is locally focussed but globally relevant. Informing and inspiring, it voices the spectrum of opinion which exists at the start of the twenty-first century. This should therefore become required reading for all those with an interest in the future of our cities.

"London, as one of the world's great cities, has many lessons for all of us, and the breadth and scope of this book makes it an invaluable study for anyone concerned with future proofing our built environment."
Clover Moore, Lord Mayor of Sydney

"All readers, whatever their personal views, will find much to stimulate their thinking in this book. Its focus and relevance will help us think more clearly about important issues both in London and around the world."
Steve Quartermain, Chief Planner, Department for Communities & Local Government

"This well-crafted book expertly opens debate and offers suggestions to meeting the challenges of planning for the future in a rapidly growing city, constrained by space but striving to remain at the world's top table."
Nick Whitten, News Editor, Estates Gazette
