We all like a good story, and we are blessed this year with many great narratives written by talented, prize-winning authors. Viet Than Nguyen, winner of the 2016 Pulitzer Prize, has been especially generous, allowing us to include not just an interview with him, but also a story from his upcoming book, The Refugees, which will be published by Grove Press in February, 2017.
Whereas we are excited by these narratives and have no doubt that you will find them entertaining, thought-provoking, and enlightening, we don’t want our inclusion of authors who are already publishing internationally in English (roughly half the volume) to overshadow the rest of this anthology. In particular, we have taken great care to seek out and select works by local authors writing in Vietnamese, which our team has translated, as well as several youth and first-time authors. We hope you take the time to not just read the stories from these different groups, but to also consider them on their own merits. This is, after all, our primary mission: Exposing readers to not only Vietnamese authors whose writing is already available, but exposing readers, as much as possible, to all of the many voices of Vietnam.
