About
During World War II, a group of Armed Forces Radio stations sprung up across the Pacific. The loosely based network changed rapidly as troops progressed towards Japan. By September 1945 and the beginning of the Allied occupation of Japan, a more permanent network was formed eventually becoming known as the Far East Network (FEN). That network, now known as American Forces Network or AFN, continues today serving an estimated 50,000 service people and their families and an estimated shadow audience of over one million Japanese.
