They come to shelters offering hope, a chance for children to live on beyond the horror of a world destroyed by the hungry undead.
Refugees call them "googies" who come in the night to take the children, sometimes by force. They recruit the lost and the corrupt to help, people like truck driver ken peters. After unwittingly delivering containers of sick and infirm people to mass graves, peters is forced into helping deliver children to a secret laboratory in upstate New York for something called Conversion testing.
But some of these scientists and soldiers believe the only way to end the struggle is to embrace the gospel of the brotherhood, a cult that believes the infection is not a virus but a form of sentient life that wishes to co-exist with humanity and share the secrets of the universe.
Peters is caught in a civil war between scientists and the cult, forming an alliance with the priestess - a woman who claims to carry the ambassador of the undead in her blood - and a battle-weary United Nations Peacekeeper unit dedicated to discovering the truth behind this mysterious laboratory. Together they try to save the children held prisoner at the resort and destroy the network of camps and labs set up across the world - including one in Wishwell, Pennsylvania called HG World.
When the cult unleashes its next generation of fast, intelligent necroambulates, the rest of humanity doesn't have a chance. It's a war for the future of the world between the forces of science & reason and the fanatical cultists tied to weird gods and ancient magics.
