Trivia-on-Book: Eligible by Curtis Sittenfeld
Take the challenge yourself and share it with friends and family for a time of fun!
Eligible, Curtis Sittenfeld’s newest novel, is “a modern retelling of Pride and Prejudice.” In this twenty-first century tale, the girls of the Bennet family keep some core traits from the Jane Austen originals, but with a modern take. Jane is a Yoga instructor about to turn forty, Liz is in her late thirties and is a magazine writer who lives in New York City, Mary is all about her online degrees, and Kitty and Lydia are still the youngest and spoiled ones who now are obsessed with Paleo diets and CrossFit.
This time, the two eldest sisters came back to the family house to help with their father’s recovery from a heart scare. Since all the girls are back home, Mrs. Bennet takes the opportunity to seek potential husbands for her daughters, and what better than a Fourth of July barbecue where Dr. Chip Bingley—a recent contestant of the TV dating show Eligible- is presented, accompanied by his sister and his school friend, Dr. Fitzwilliam Darcy.
Taking the characteristic humor from Jane Austen’s original, Curtis Sittenfeld made a transition from the countryside of England in the early 1800s to the modern society of Cincinnati.
