Wyndgate Academy is an exclusive school for training young neohumans in the use and control of their gifts. It is one of seven private schools across America in competition with the government's own schools. Those have been described as gulags, and indoctrination camps. Psychic waste dumps that will eventually do far more harm than good. With a new administration in power, young neohumans are being forced to choose between which schools to attend as a dark cloud of totalitarianism exercised in the name of fairness and public safety descends on the country.
Cadre 5 begins with five students from radically different backgrounds being forced together by their unique genetic legacy. Each comes to the table with their own personalities and their own agendas, not to mention an array of fantastic powers:
Boomer- the son of Lady Lighting, the worlds greatest superhero. A young man with definite Oedipal issues and a legacy to live up to. His flight power is off the chart and what he learns to do with his force fields becomes legendary.
Faerie- the youngest graduate of the Psicorps Academy in its history. She comes to the school with an agenda all her own. Her devout faith immediately puts her at odds with some of her classmates.
Glitch- the daughter of an ACLU lawyer and an absent father who has sworn to force her into an arranged marriage or kill her for dishonoring the family. With a teleportation gift that can traverse continents and a keen desire to stay alive that may prove difficult.
Ghost- A young southern lad with his own secret and a family that has taught him the most dangerous skill in the world- to think for himself. With the ability to go invisible and change his density, combined with a keen tactical mind, he becomes a key player in the team's growth.
Shadow Claw- The richest teenager in the world. Her cat's ears and tail barely scratch the surface of the power radiating from the neohuman power contained in her limbs. Her own secret threatens to tear the team apart or forge it into a stronger alloy.
Energon- the son of two American military officers with the ability to absorb and manipulate energy. His quiet strength serves the team well in his short sojourn among them.
Speedfire- a devilishly handsome feral with horns, fangs, pointed ears and a tail who can hit speeds in excess of Mach 1. He has serious trust issues with women thanks to his abandonment by his mother.
Lightwing- Speedfire's best friend and the angel half of the duo. His wings make him stand out, but his power to control light is amazing.
Ace- The only class 8 neohuman on the team. His powers are not as great as the others, but their specific combination and his heart makes him their equal.
They find themselves in conflict with Fury, a walking natural disaster who has left whole armored divisions piles of twisted scrap metal and whose battles with Lady Lightning are legendary. When she learns that her old foe has a son at Wyndgate Academy, the race is on.
Who is the mysterious Robert Killpatrick and what role does he play in their origins? Who are the Elderkin that he claims to serve, and who are the "other tribes"? These are only the beginnings of the mysteries surrounding the small sleepy school nestled in the mountains of West Virginia as the students try to survive not only the neohumans they face, but the very government they are training to protect.
