Bear Trap is a dark, taunt, riveting, sexy, hair raising, at times nasty and lurid, adrenalin filled, roller coaster ride thriller. It is not for the faint hearted.
Bear Trap is the first book in the Special Brand of Justice book series. Each volume focuses on characters who take the law into their own hands, either for the purpose of revenge or to right a wrong that the legal system has neglected.
Bear Trap, at fewer than twenty five thousand words, is a novella that is considerably longer than the average short story, but significantly shorter than the typical novel. It can be read by the average reader in a long afternoon or savored over a weekend.
Bear Trap focuses on detective Eddie McCord.
The book opens approximately two years after McCord has returned home from a one year tour of duty in Afghanistan where he served as a result of being an army reservist in the National Guard. Three weeks prior to returning home to his job as a police detective his wife and two children were killed in a mysterious hit and run car accident that was never solved.
After his return to active duty as a police detective his supervisors, Police Chief Brady and Chief Inspector Mallahan, begin to observe changes in the demeanor of their once star detective, including an increase in complaints by suspects that Eddie has used unnecessary force while arresting them.
When several suspects that Eddie is investigating disappear and one is found murdered, Brady and Mallahan’s concerns escalate into anxiety fraught suspicion. Could their once star detective be breaking the law and acting as an unhinged, sick and twisted , one man judge, jury, and executioner?
In order to develop and begin to build a case against Eddie, Brady and Mallahan decide to use the new and under utilized police staff psychologist, the young, competent, and shapely Dr. Elisa Johnson, to conduct a psychological evaluation of Eddie and provide counseling. They do not advise Dr. Johnson of their suspicions; but, instead, use as a pretext the increasing number of complaints against Eddie for unreasonable use of force by arrested suspects as grounds for ordering his evaluation and counseling.
Brady and Mallahan do not anticipate and foresee that romantic sparks will fly between Eddie and Dr. Johnson and that the two will be mutually attracted to each other by a raw animal magnetism like moths to a flame.
When a serial sex murderer and pornographer nick named “Bear” who is being investigated by Eddie discovers that his partner in crime is missing, he believes that Eddie was involved in his disappearance and that Eddie intends to murder Bear next. Bear decides that he has to kill Eddie before Eddie kills him.
A dark and sinister psychological game of cat and mouse develops between all the characters. Will Bear kill Eddie? Will Brady and Mallahan be able to confirm their suspicions that Eddie has become mentally unhinged and turned into a psycho who is murdering suspects? Will Dr. Johnson be able to trust Eddie and allow their relationship to flourish? Will Eddie survive?

Excerpts from Bear Trap
From Chapter 1
Eddie paused and then bent down close to Skinny’s face and spoke again in a low voice looking very seriously and directly into Skinny’s eyes. “And you see Skinny, this creates a problem for me. Because if I break every bone in your body, then I really can’t make an arrest. You see if I take you in now, I can claim that you accidentally broke your hand resisting arrest. But if I have to break every bone in your body… well then I really can’t take you in. Hell…. no one would believe you broke every bone in your body resisting arrest… now would they?”
Skinny nodded and murmured, “No.”
“So you know what that means Skinny, don’t you?” Eddie asked.
