Michael Gerwat was born blind, but found in music all he needed - beauty, solace, self-expression and a rewarding career. He tuned keyboard instruments for many famous rock bands until his life fell apart. He suffered a severe hearing loss leading to total deafness which deprived him of his beloved music, his independence and his career.
This is Mick's story told in his own words and in those of his wife, Pat. Mick looks back to his childhood and early life describing what it was like growing up in the enclosed communities of schools for the blind. He talks with searing honesty of his unhappy home background and how he was saved by music.
Pat talks of their despair in the early days of Mick's deafness and describes the struggle they had to get support and to create a new, meaningful life for Mick.
She also explores how this disaster affected their relationship. Suddenly there was very little they could share and for a time communication was restricted to spelling on Mick's hand.
There are moments of intense sadness but also touches of humour as Mick recalls amusing incidents at school and with his guide dog Bridget. Despite the difficulties he faced, Mick's indomitable spirit shines through. This is a story of courage and hope.
